Business Intelligence Project Management: Getting It Right
Your company is getting ready to launch its business intelligence (BI) software project. You’ve been appointed as its project manager. What should you expect?
BI projects do have their issues, especially when it comes to integration with third party BPM, CRM, and ERP systems as well as platforms and software like Cognos and Business Objects. There’s also the need to address the huge amounts of data that the business may be generating, and how this will be dealt with.
There are several things you can do right now to help get your BI project on the right track. One of these is to find solutions by analyzing team interests when compared to positions.
Because BI projects are very often cross-organizational in nature, you’ll have numerous teams involved. Expect to work with your business’ departments, and various people who have competing interests. With this in mind, you can work to obtain positive agreements through understanding your position and interest with those of others.
Another area is to understand the causes of any poor team performances and then offer positive feedback to help with get back on track. You will need to understand the problems because getting to the root causes will then get your team working better and more productively.
You should also look to providing that feedback early on in the project. It’s far better to do this with any minor issues early on rather than leaving it later on in the project when there is much more to deal with. Plus, positive feedback goes a long way to the overall morale of the team. The more you can share with them, the better the performance.
